TIP 1: Mindset

Be Prepared, Be Very Prepared

Every great goal starts with a great mindset

Embrace a growth mindsetA growth mindset is the belief that your abilities and skills can be developed through hard work and dedication. Embracing a growth mindset can help you stay motivated and resilient as you develop your skills.
Take on new challengesChallenge yourself with new tasks and projects regularly to develop new skills.
Seek feedbackAsk for feedback from others, like colleagues or mentors, to identify areas where you can refine and hone your skills.
Invest in trainingTake courses, attend workshops, and seek out other educational opportunities to help develop your skills.
Learn from failureFailure is a natural part of the learning process. Rather than letting failure discourage you, use it as an opportunity to learn and improve your skills.
Practice regularlyMake time to practice regularly, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day.

TIP 2: SMART

SMART goals are better than stupid goals

And we all want to be SMART, right?

SMART - specific - measurable - achievable - relevant - time-bound

When deciding to set a goal, think about these questions:

  • What is important to you?
  • What interests you?
  • What do you want to achieve?

Connect the why to your goal.

Why are you wanting to achieve something?

Example
If your goal is to lose weight, then the ‘why’ could be so you can be healthy and able to play with your grandkids.

Write down your SMART goal

  • Specific: Don’t be vague, You want to lose weight, ok, let’s be more specific. How much do you want to lose?
  • Measurable: Your goal should have a clear end point that you can measure, like a number or a quantity.
  • Achievable: You want your goal to push you but keep in mind what you can do. Wanting to lose 10 lbs in one week is not achievable.
  • Realistic: This step goes hand-in-hand with Achievable. Wanting to lose 10 lbs in one week and look like an Olympic athlete is not realistic.
  • Time-Bound: You want to have a timeframe otherwise it’s easy to drift off course.

TIP 3: Plan

TIP 5: Act

How to take action one step at a time

The hardest step is always the first step when you step into the unknown, outside of your comfort zone. Here you will be vulnerable, and you may even fall down, but here is where growth happens and where dreams become reality.

Steps to taking that first step:

  • Start small. Just like a drop of water can break a rock over time, small steps are the key to starting your goal.
  • Every day, every week, block time on your calendar to work on your goal and commit to it.
  • Don’t underestimate the power of consistency. 17 minutes a day 7 days a week becomes 100 hours in a year. And, as the 100-hour rule states: you will become better at a given task than 95% of the population.

At this stage, you may feel fear and that’s normal. You’re taking a risk and setting yourself up to potentially fall. What sets the most successful people apart is that they embrace this risk; they embrace the possibility of falling because they view falling as an opportunity to learn and improve. As Ray Dalio says, “The challenges you face will test and strengthen you. If you’re not failing, you’re not pushing your limits, and if you’re not pushing your limits, you’re not maximizing your potential.” (p.153 from the book Principles)

TIP 6: Achieve

Keep going, you can do it, you are almost there, let’s go to the end!

Let’s talk about how we can stay on course.

With any long-term goal, it’s important to stay motivated so you can complete your goal. These steps can help you stay motivated:

  • Celebrate each milestone. This will help you to stay motivated and acknowledge the progress you are making along the way.
  • Take responsibility. It’s important to stay accountable. You can do this by having an accountability partner. Someone who checks in with you every week to see how your progress is going.
  • Reward yourself. Treat yourself to something you enjoy; a snack, an activity, or an outing. This will help keep you energized and on track.

Remember nothing happens overnight and no goal is accomplished without effort. Everything worthwhile will have its challenging moments. But when you dig deep, remember your ‘why’ and keep going, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. And there is nothing more satisfying than overcoming challenges, becoming stronger, more confident and more capable than you thought possible.

TIP 7: Future / Reflection

What if you could predict the future, next time?

Well, now you can!

What is a retrospective?A retrospective is a formal review that you conduct at the end of a project, task, or goal.
Why is it important? It allows you to reflect on your progress, learn from your experiences, and make improvements for the future.
How to do it?
  1. Reflect on your progress
  2. Identify areas for improvement
  3. Make a plan for the future, and
  4. Implement it to achieve your goals more effectively
Benefits of a retrospectiveA retrospective can help you celebrate your successes and reinforce the positive habits and behaviors that helped you achieve your goal.

Example

You may discover that you didn’t allow yourself enough time to complete a task, or that you didn’t have the necessary skills or resources to accomplish a certain goal.

Moving forward: Armed with this knowledge, you can adjust your approach and make changes to your timeline, strategy, or resources for future goals.
